Poetry Out Loud

Poetry provides a powerful way to express feelings. One of the most lyrical passages in literature is the beautiful balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet. Reading the play, we hear how the characters' feelings are expressed in poetic devices and the scenery is described in poetic images.

Many freshman classes have been reading William Shakespeare's poetry aloud and also enjoying passages of good books as we share them aloud. Today we will visit a popular web site Poetry Aloud to view video of high school students as they compete in reciting poetry aloud.

The site is featured on our "handy links" list on our blogger home page, but this link will take you directly to the video of recitation. Watch these students and listen to their expression as you discover the meaning of the poetry.

Today as you visit the site, find a poem you'd like to recite to the class. Print it off and bring it back to the classroom to practice reading aloud. Be sure to find something you like, something that brings meaning to you...

Until then, adieu dear friends. Happy reading and blogging!

Here's my favorite. Visit this link to read "The Peace of Wild Things" by Wendell Berry. It reminds me of the comfort I get from nature and also from my friends Katie and Miles. Their love and their company bring peace to me no matter what is going on in the world...
